HDMI Makes Multimedia Real

There has been drastic mushrooming in the demands of multimedia devices. As more consumers seek for better quality audio, sharper pictures as well as realistic colors, the older versions of multimedia delivery seemed to be typically mediocre. Hence, the new High-definition multimedia interface is here to make the multimedia much more genuine.

Throughout the passage of time as well as the abundance of researches have been done, the development of new multimedia interfacing standards have come to emerge its presence. Now, the most popular standard to deliver multimedia content is probably the HDMI (High-definition multimedia interface). This novel interface applies the use of cables to relocate any uncompressed multimedia content to your multimedia device, along with the best industrial performance.

No doubt, the HDMI has been a widely adopted interface either in blue-ray players, game consoles, other entertainment devices as well as computers to transfer high-definition videos and channels of audio for a supreme viewing and listening experience. This new multimedia interface technology is the latest where it uses the specialized cable which is really pricey if you purchase it from a normal store. The HDI standard was established by leaders of the entertainment technology. Among the reputable names include Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, Hitachi, Philips and Thomson. Basically they collaborate together to promote the common standard to ensure a wide adoption among manufacturers besides preventing problems of incompatible cables.

The HDMI was initially launched in 2003 and it has undergone several upgrading processes to improve its capabilities. Now, the technology is able to provide a high resolution screening experience. One great thing is that even though there are enhancements in the capabilities and transport rates, the same cables can be used. There are two types of connectors, the new one being invented for the 1.3 standard cables. The 1.3 standard is undoubtedly better in capabilities to deliver the high quality content hence the cables are more expensive than the normal version cables.

The cables for the new multimedia interface are easily available in your local electronic stores or any leading electronics chain. But of course, the idea of buying the cables from the internet is much better as they are cheaper and branded cables sold in the internet have better quality. This is reasonable as most common electrical stores may keep only sub-standard goods. Besides, internet stores also guarantee a refund if the cable is faulty. The internet has a wide array of selection in terms of the lengths, configurations, usage and budget.

What Is the Difference Between Multimedia and Animation?

So what exactly is the difference between Multimedia and Animation?

The word multimedia is, in itself, explanatory. It refers to the practice of using multiple forms of media, which may or may not include animation, simultaneously, within a given product or project. Multimedia products will often combine text, still images, video, film, animation and sound within one package.

Multimedia products are often interactive in nature and can only generally be created on, and accessed by, a computing device.

Multimedia now encompasses a vast array of products, projects and services. Familiar examples are the Computer Based Training courses (CBT”s) used in education or the typical instructional CD-ROMs so often favored by the learner driver.

The CV of an artist for example, containing, a headshot, biography and a portfolio of work, which is then burned to, and delivered on CD-rom, would also be considered multimedia in nature and multimedia is very often used in the corporate setting in the form of presentations.

Even the video gaming enthusiast is not immune to the onslaught of the multimedia revolution as he or she battles within the evermore complex multi-player gaming arena known as MMORPGs.

One of the most important features of the multimedia product or service is that it is more often than not, interactive in nature. The learner driver training CD mentioned previously would be a prime example as it would require the user to engage with the content throughout.

This type of educational platform also serves as a classic example of the non-linear forms of multimedia which requires interaction and input from the user over the control and delivery of the content. Multimedia in its linear form – a simple example being Cinema – offers little or no scope for such interaction or control.

The use of the term multimedia has changed over the years and it was only during the 90’s that it acquired its current meaning. Multimedia can be live or pre-recorded and with the advent of computer tablets, smart phones, advanced gaming platforms and the like, multimedia is now an all pervasive force.

Animation on the other hand is a ‘specific cinematic medium’ which often utilizes hundreds, sometimes thousands of still images. These images are combined in sequence over a specific time period (cinematically speaking) usually 24, 25, or 30 frames per second. When these images, which will all vary slightly from one another, are recorded and replayed in rapid succession, they create the illusion of movement.

Animations can be 2D or 3D. Can be hand drawn or computer generated. Involve clay models, puppets, shadows or cut-outs. Some animation may involve all these elements and more. Good cinematic examples of 3D animations are Toy Story, Shrek, The Incredibles and The Croods.

3D animation is a very complex area with a terminology that is uniquely its own. Essentially 3D animation starts with the creation or modelling of a 3D mesh of the object or character to be created. The mesh can then be refined by the modeller before being rigged and programmed for movement. 3D animation does require some basic drawing skills at least, is very technical, and relies heavily on the use of 3D textures and lighting.

Traditional 2D animation on the other hand involved the processing of thousands of individual images copied from original paper drawings onto transparent acetates known as Cels. Each Cel was then carefully coloured and set against a painted background before being photographed one by one with the aid of a rostrum camera.

This method of film-making bought us classics such as Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs, 101 Dalmatians and the Lady and the Tramp.

Stopmotion animation is similar to the above the only difference being that a physical object such as a doll or puppet will appear to move on its own when it is manipulated bit by bit between photographed frames.

Nowadays the process of animation is much less cumbersome as much animation is created and edited on computers using vector or bitmap images with sophisticated software used for coloring and camera movement.

Multimedia and Multimedia Courses: Creating a Different World, Literally

During the first week of December, a rare and strong late-season category 4 typhoon named Bopha was on the path of destruction along the western Pacific including Palau and the Philippines. But instead of getting their updates from the radio and TV, people at home or in evacuation centers watched live streams that contained multimedia clips of forecast models and received multimedia messages in their mobile devices. Residents in hazardous areas responded positively to the call for pre-emptive evacuation because they saw the potential damage Bopha can cause via a multimedia presentation.

They tell better stories; they drive home the truth more effectively and efficiently. Multimedia as platforms of communication have come a long way from the lights and sounds display that was referred to by singer Bob Goldste in 1966 as a publicity gimmick for his “LightWorks at L’Oursin” production.

Today, multimedia, as the term implies, is a combination of several media of communication that caters to the different sense organs primarily hearing and seeing. I say primarily because there are innovations that allow you to smell and taste and experience also. These include the written texts, still and moving images, graphic images, and audio components that are accessed, oftentimes interactively, via electronic means.

Multimedia in the 90s were focused as a platform of communication for entertainment and educational purposes. These days, multimedia creations are used in journalism, education, medicine, engineering, architecture, business, and even international relations among many fields. But more than that, multimedia has evolved from audiovisual presentations to highly advanced innovations that create a different reality.

Multimedia Courses

Most of today’s multimedia Courses are designed to hone highly specialized skills that capture the imagination of contemporary viewers. Let us look at a few of them.

1. Augmented Reality – As the term implies, multimedia innovations capture real, physical, or actual reality and uses computer technology to enhance sensory experience. These include sounds, graphics, video, interactive components, and GPS feeds. For example, consider the US Open Ladies Finals 2013. While you were watching real-time battle between eventual champion Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka, you were also informed of match statistics, historical perspectives, crowd point-of-views, etc. Thus reality is not replaced or substituted (like virtual reality) but simply enhanced or augmented. When Serena Williams scored an ace, you were also informed that she has the best serve in the history of tennis.

2. Electro-Holographic Display – The CNN Presidential Election Coverage 2008 is arguably its world debut but Electro-Holographic Display has been imagined or talked about as early as the first Star Wars Trilogy. An award-winning actress in the movie Simone was created by this technology. Electro-Holography uses a rare combination of technical wizardry, virtual gadgetry and aesthetic supremacy to record, reconstruct and release 3D objects that represents the real one, say, Anderson Cooper reporting live.

3. Audioscopic – Music and noise are a part of the reality of the new generation. But new innovations allow them to not just listen but experience music using products with audio capacity. These include clothes, furniture, books, etc. Fashion designers are now also enrolling in multimedia courses to incorporate these innovations.

These and more are signs that multimedia is creating a different world. And those who wish to be part of it find it useful to enroll in multimedia courses that provide basic and advance skills to become a major contributor in the industry.

Your audience will enjoy your books more, and they will be much more likely to recommend them to other people.

The trend toward multimedia eBooks is still in its infancy. Recently, the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) released a proposed specification for the new EPUB 3 standard that will replace the current EPUB format. This new standard specifically addresses multimedia features, including support for audio, video and JavaScript. As more authors and publishers learn about EPUB 3, the number of multimedia eBooks that are written and published will certainly increase over time.

Adding multimedia content to eBooks can require considerable technical expertise. If you are a busy publisher or author, you can retain the services of an experienced multimedia eBook conversion company to do the work for you.
